LOLER & PUWER Thorough Inspection & Examination Services

At D&S Power, we provide independent LOLER Thorough Inspections for lifting equipment across a wide range of industries, helping duty holders meet their legal obligations, reduce risk, and maintain safe working environments.

Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), all lifting equipment used at work must be thoroughly examined by a competent person at specified intervals, with a written report produced and retained.

What Is a LOLER Thorough Examination?

A LOLER Thorough Examination is a detailed, systematic safety inspection of lifting equipment to confirm it remains safe for continued use. It is not routine maintenance or servicing, but a formal assessment focused on identifying defects, deterioration, and safety-critical issues.

Examinations assess:

  • Structural integrity and stability

  • Load-bearing components

  • Wear, fatigue, corrosion, and damage

  • Safety devices, locking mechanisms, and controls

  • Correct installation and ongoing suitability

All examinations must be carried out by a competent and impartial person, in line with guidance issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Lifting Equipment Covered by LOLER

We carry out LOLER Thorough Examinations on a wide range of lifting equipment, including:

  • Hoists and lifting beams

  • Cranes and lifting frames

  • Fork attachments and lifting accessories

  • Telehandlers and material handlers

  • Vehicle lifts and workshop equipment

  • Chains, slings, shackles, and eyebolts

  • Any equipment used to lift or lower loads

If equipment is used to lift people or loads, it is likely covered by LOLER.

Inspection Intervals Under LOLER

LOLER requires lifting equipment to be examined:

  • Every 6 months – where people are lifted or lifting accessories are used

  • Every 12 months – for lifting equipment lifting goods only

  • After installation, relocation, or significant modification

  • Following exceptional circumstances, such as damage or overload

We can also operate to manufacturer-specified intervals where required.
